Scibble Sesh: going back to basics
After a long hiatus of posting, this journal entry kickstarts the creative journey again. Returning to graphite drawing has demonstrated the joys of keeping things simple, and proved that sometimes we all need to go back to our roots to appreciate why we started.
I started my process how I always have; collating imagery that speaks to me. Whether it’s the aesthetic, the meaning, the way it makes me feel, and I use my response to drive my practice. Art is inherently subjective and conversational and we all respond to different art forms in different ways. For artists, a singular artwork signifies where that person is in their creative and personal journey, as we’re constantly responding to our surroundings and manifesting our ideas (hence why art journals are cherished folios of growth and development).
For this exercise, I wanted to return to graphite drawing because of my familiarity to the medium. It was about eliminating complex processes and focusing on the task at hand: drawing and responding to my own intuition. In life, whether it’s planning for the future or handling work/life balances we tend to overthink and overcomplicate things, and sometimes we lose sight of our goals and desires. Resetting or restarting, however you might phrase it, isn’t a sign of going backwards or stopping. Instead, it’s giving yourself a chance to remember why you started your goals (and that infectious feeling of determination) and help you accelerate forward.
That is what this simple drawing task was for me. An opportunity for me to develop stronger discipline and create no matter how “simple”.
